"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me." [John 14:6]

Meet Jesus, our High Priest and Ultimate Sacrifice
Hebrews 4:14-16
Growing up outside the Catholic tradition, I never gave much thought to the concept of a priest. But the more I’ve studied Scripture, the more I’ve come to see that understanding the biblical concepts of the high priest and the sacrificial lamb, is essential to understanding who Jesus truly is, and important it is to the gospel message.
The High Priest in the Old Testament
In the Old Testament, God established the position of high priest as a kind of bridge between His holy presence and sinful humanity. Once a year, this high priest was permitted to enter the innermost sanctuary, where the presence of God resided, to offer a sacrifice that would atone for the sins of the entire nation.
It was a sacred and solemn calling. The high priest had to follow every detail of God’s instruction perfectly, because his very life depended on it. He would sacrifice the purest animals, sprinkle their blood on the altar in the Holy of Holies, and stand as an intercessor between God and His people on the Day of Atonement. When God accepted the sacrifice, the people were pardoned for another year. It was an extraordinary moment of grace, and an enormous weight to carry.
Jesus: The Ultimate High Priest
Hebrews 4:14 tells us that Jesus is our great High Priest. Let that sink in.
Unlike the Old Testament high priest, a sinful man who had to repeat this ritual every year, Jesus is the sinless, blameless Son of God who offered Himself once, for all time. He didn’t bring an animal to the altar. He became the ultimate sacrifice. In perfect obedience to the Father, He gave His life on the cross, shedding His own blood to atone for our sin (Philippians 2:8; Hebrews 10:12; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
It is Finished
When it was finished, He said exactly that: “It is finished.” He then gave His spirit into the Father’s hands, and sealed our redemption once and for all. After resurrecting from the dead, He ascended to heaven and now sits at the right hand of God, still interceding for us as our High Priest.
Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us Romans 8:34.
Think about that for a moment. Right now, Jesus is speaking on our behalf before the throne of God. On my behalf: He knows my name! This is transforming truth!
Come Boldly
Because of what Jesus has done, Hebrews 4:16 invites us to “come boldly to the throne of grace.” Not hesitantly. Not from a distance. Boldly, because our High Priest has already paid the price and opened the way for us to receive grace and mercy.
You don’t need a human mediator. You have Jesus Himself, the one who was tempted as we are, who knows what it is to be human, and who chose to willingly lay down His life so that we could be reconciled to God.
A Prayer for Today
Lord Jesus, thank You for being both my High Priest and my sacrifice. Thank You that You didn’t simply point the way to God; You are the way. Help me never to take for granted what You have done, and may I come to You today not with fear, but with the boldness and confidence You’ve made possible. You are worthy of all my worship and praise. Amen.
